To best understand your users I use a set of tools to view a variety of elements of their online behaviour.While this is not always done in real-time we can view historically what your users have been up to and create a variety of paths for them to take. This is more commonly known as A-B testing. Once I know the pages they visit, the duration they spend on the page as well as how long they look at certain elements such as images, text or call to action I can make clear decisions about where to improve user experience and help turn poor performing areas into high performing areas. The tools I use are available to purchase either via a subscription basis or free to use on open platform software such as Google.

How do I get to know your customers better?


Google Analytics

Website tracking tools
Google Analytics is one of the first tools to best understand your customers and their browsing habits through your site. This tool is able to report on all your website traffic and use the customer's google account data to give you a detailed analysis of the types of users visiting your site. It is also able to track:
  • Number of users visiting your site
  • The average duration they spend on your site
  • The average bounce rate (which corresponds to how long they stay before leaving)
  • Number of views per page
  • Goal completions (set by yourself on key areas such as purchase buttons or contact forms)
  • The user's sex, age and approximate location (country)

Hot Jar

Website heat mapping
To dive even deeper into your users, I can use a paid tool called Hot Jar. This clever tool can be applied to key pages of your website such as product pages or contact forms to see what the user is doing while on the page. It is also able to capture a variety of data points and catch heat maps of where the user cursor/finger spends most of the time. This could be pressing a call to action or maybe using the navigation. Here we can gather accurate data to see what works and what doesn't as well as create A-B testing scenarios such as different landing pages to see how the user reacts to them.

Interviews

Talking to your users
If you are looking for more direct feedback there is no better way than interviewing the user themselves. While this is tricky to do, as not all users of your site are going to be willing to partake in an interview, this data is that of the highest grade and provides the most amount of feedback which I can use to accurately navigate the user to the place they want to be. If the general user of your site isn't available to be interviewed, I would recommend gathering stakeholders of people that interact with your users the most to answer questions to figure out what the user is looking for.
